Apprentice Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician

Darlington, Co Durham (DL1 4QD) Full Time (40 hours/week) Start Date: 6 May 2026 Duration: 3 years
Open - Closes 23 April 2026

To provide general maintenance and repair service to a fleet of HGV trucks. You will be required to carry out servicing to VOSA standards and regulations and carry out 6 weekly inspection of vehicles to include braking systems, suspension systems, electrical and engine maintenance.

What You'll Do:

  • MOT inspection
  • Learn the fundamentals of HGV technologies (chassis design, engine, fuels, transmissions, electrical systems)
  • Understand HGV configurations and applications
  • Develop diagnosing principles and logical problem-solving techniques
  • Service, inspect and maintain vehicles and trailers to expected standards
  • Work with hydraulic and air braking, air suspension systems, and air-conditioning

Requirements:

  • GCSE in Maths and English (Grade A-C or 4 and above)
  • Problem solving skills
  • Team working abilities
  • Initiative
  • Physical fitness
  • Valid residency status and right to work in England

Training & Qualifications:

  • Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician apprenticeship standard
  • Training provided by Darlington College
  • Working 4 days per week plus 1 day per week studying at college
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in maths and English (if required)
  • End-Point Assessment (EPA)

Salary & Benefits:

  • £16,640 for your first year (National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices)
  • Could increase depending on your age
  • Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm
  • Opportunity to secure a long-term position after successful completion
